Today in History Tulip mania came to an abrupt halt in 1637 in the United Provinces (Netherlands) as contract holders could no longer find buyers. The Colony of Massachussetts printed the first American paper money in 1690. Illinois Territory was created in 1813. 1913 saw the ratification of the 16th Amendment authorizing the federal government to impose and collect inocme tax. As part of Operation Thunderclap in 1945, 1,000 B-17 planes bombed Berlin killing over 2,500 and making 120,000 homeless. The Music Died in 1959 near Clear Lake, Iowa when the plane piloted by Roger Peterson and carrying the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly crashed. Outspoken NYPD Officer Frank Serpico was shot in the face during a drug bust in Brooklyn in what is considered a setup by fellow officers-Serpico survived and went on to testify against a corrupt police department. And in 1995, Astronaut Eileen piloted the space shuttle becoming the first female to do so. |
