Nonmetallic Review

The following suggestions are to be used with the nine nonmetallic minerals we have previously discussed.

  1. As a class discussion or individually, give students a list of the nonmetallic minerals in this unit. Make two columns, one for agriculture and one for manufacturing. Have students write each mineral under the appropriate column according to its main uses. Some minerals will be in both columns.
  1. Give students a list of the nonmetallic minerals to take home. Have students try to find products made from these minerals in and around their homes and write them on the list. Share the answers in class.
  1. Play a puzzle game. Write the name of each nonmetallic mineral on a piece of tag-board. Cut each into three pieces. (Adjust number of pieces to class size.) Mix them up and give one piece to each student. On a given signal, everyone tries to find the pieces that complete their word. When they have found each other, the teams must think of at least one thing that their mineral can be used for. When the teacher calls on them, they tell the class what their mineral is and its use(s).
