 Metallic Review

The following suggestions are to be used with the nine metallic minerals we have previously discussed.

  1. Discuss which metals were or are used in pipes, why some are still used and why others aren’t.
  1. Try to get a sample of each metal and do several experiments with them as a group. For example, which ones rust, bend easily, scratch hard and soft surfaces, and so on.
  1. Estimate how much of a specific metal it would take to make a pound. Where samples are available, demonstrate the actual amount with a scale.
  1. Divide class into small groups. Have each group pick the name of a metal from a hat. Each group should give clues to the class, who try to guess which metal the group represents. Some metals may be repeated or left out to avoid answers by elimination.
  2. Make a bar graph depicting each metal and its weight relative to water. May be done on a master form by each student or as a bulletin board or wall mural.
